First, keep in mind that the salesperson usually needs to sell you an ad much more than you need the ad. Use this to your advantage.

When I would go into a restaurant to sell an ad I would hear statements like this:

  • "We've used up all of our budget for this year."
  • "I've spent too much on advertising already."
  • "Business is slow. I can't spend anything else on advertising this year."

Then I would say, "Let me make you an offer you can't refuse." Many of the restaurant owners or managers still would not even listen to a price. They would let me walk out the door and never hear a price.

I remember going into one restaurant at 7:00 p.m. one evening. There was not a single customer in the whole place. I talked to the owner about an ad and she said, "I have a policy that I don't do any advertising." It was all I could do to keep from saying, I can see that."
