New Employee Onboarding: Making Day One Memorable

RestaurantOwner Insights - March 14, 2024

The struggle to attract and retain restaurant staff is fiercer than ever. For many in the restaurant industry, finding staff is just the first hurdle; keeping them from leaving shortly after is equally challenging.

Research indicates that restaurants adopting a strategic approach to recruitment, onboarding, and training see notably better retention rates compared to those that do not prioritize these aspects.

Making the first day memorable for new hires is crucial for setting a positive tone and fostering a sense of belonging from the start.

RO subscribers to Premium Membership plans are using our Custom Training Platform to greatly enhance the onboarding of newly hired staff. They have found that combining personalized welcoming activities with online onboarding training ensures their first day is not only informative but also welcoming and engaging. Here are a few ways our members are creating great first days.

Meet with the Owner, General Manager or Chef: Set up a short meeting with a key figure in the restaurant who can welcome them personally. This gesture can make new hires feel valued and give insight into the restaurant's leadership and vision.

This welcoming is reinforced by a short welcome video from the owner(s) explaining the mission, vision, and values for the restaurant. No special tools needed. Using their cell phones or video cameras against the restaurant’s backdrop, they simply tell their story of how the restaurant came to be. They then add the video to the onboarding training module.

Focused Training Segments: Provide short, engaging training sessions on the restaurant's history, values, menu highlights, and customer service standards. Keeping these interactive can help maintain interest and encourage questions.

Include selected off-the-shelf lessons, courses, and quizzes from our more than 400 lessons and quiz templates. Many of these templates are ready to use with no editing required. Others simply need restaurant-specific information added.
