How to Attract Better Employees
As most coaches will tell you, creating a championship athletic team depends to a large degree on being able to identify and attract the best talent. It's not much different in the restaurant business.
Without quality people it's very difficult to create a team that will consistently exhibit cooperation, teamwork, productivity, self-management, flexibility and give you that extra effort when you need it. If we hire turkeys, we usually end up with turkeys, no matter how much training, retraining, motivating and personal development we put them through. Our objective in this series of articles is to give you some proven ways to improve your chances of identifying winners and letting the turkeys move on to find other employment, preferably, in another industry.
Where to Find Quality Applicants
A discussion of selecting good employees in today's "labor challenged" environment would not be complete or fair without mentioning the difficult task of attracting any applicants, much less quality applicants. Because of reasons you're already familiar with, there just aren't a lot of quality foodservice applicants knocking on your doors for a job.
However, there are quality workers out there. The key is recognizing that most of them are currently working somewhere else, and you've got to become a little creative in finding them and getting them to work for your restaurant.
