Good Employees Quit Bad Bosses — Why Restaurant Management Training is Essential for Staff Retention
Good people won’t put up with a bad boss. That’s right. Generally, people don’t quit the company, they quit their boss and today, any capable, good restaurant worker with a bad manager can get a new job faster than a teenager can reply to a text message.
And don’t kid yourself, there are LOTS of bad managers in the restaurant industry. We hear stories from front line team members all the time. Micromanaging, inconsiderate, inconsistent, moody and intimidating are just a few of the negative attributes people use to describe the incompetent restaurant management teams they’ve had.
One reason for bad management practices in restaurants is that it’s VERY common, especially in smaller, independent restaurants, to promote a good staff level team member into a management position with LITTLE or NO MANANGMENT TRAINING!
Having a good or even exceptional line cook, server, or expo doesn’t mean that person is going to be good at managing people (especially with little or no training).
Owners: recognize that “doing” the work is very, very different than getting the same work done through others. Without proper training, promoting a good front line restaurant employee to management often results in little more than turning a once good employee into a bad boss.
A manager is not a person who can do the work better than his people; he is a person who can get his people to do the work better than he can.
