A quick Google search reveals no shortage of third-party background check vendors and online content explaining how best to choose among them.

And no wonder, given the benefits background checks can provide to your business. Performing background checks on applicants and employees can help to protect your assets, your customers, your reputation and your employees; they can help you defend against a "negligent hiring" claim; and they can even help you determine whether you are hiring the best individuals for the job.

Certainly, you want to ensure that your staff members do not have a history of violent behavior. If an applicant's duties involve driving the restaurant's van, you will be interested in his or her driving record. And for any management or staff who will be responsible for handling money or purchasing and accounting (such as your bookkeeper), a credit report might indicate their personal financial responsibility.
