National Food Safety Month 2026: Your Recipe for Food Safety Success

Running a independent restaurant means balancing countless priorities every day. Between managing labor, controlling food costs, and delivering exceptional guest experiences, food safety can never take a back seat.

This September, during National Food Safety Month 2026, ServSafe invites independent restaurant owners and operators to join us in building a Recipe for Food Safety Success.

Throughout the month, ServSafe will release Food Safety Education Bundles packed with practical resources, team activities, and actionable tools designed to help operators strengthen food safety practices across their businesses.

WEEKLY RECIPES FOR SAFETY SUCCESS

Week 1: Build a Strong Food Safety Culture. Use this week's resources to assess your current culture, discuss food safety expectations during pre-shift meetings, recognize employees who demonstrate safe behaviors, and empower your team to identify and address risks before they become problems.

Week 2: Clean and Sanitize with Confidence. Evaluate cleaning and sanitizing procedures, review sanitizer concentrations, verify cleaning schedules are being followed, and ensure employees understand the difference between cleaning and sanitizing.

Week 3: Prevent Cross-Contamination. Check storage practices, review color-coding systems, reinforce procedures for handling raw and ready-to-eat foods, and identify areas where cross-contamination risks may exist.

Week 4: Reinforce Good Personal Hygiene Practices. Review handwashing procedures, illness reporting policies, and glove-use requirements with your team. Incorporate food safety reminders into shift meetings to keep critical behaviors top of mind.

Week 5: Master Time and Temperature Control. Verify thermometers are calibrated, confirm temperature logs are completed accurately, and ensure employees understand critical temperature requirements.

Safe Minimum Cooking Temperatures: Ensuring an excellent guest experience is everyone in the restaurant's job, and food safety is fundamental for that experience. Safe minimum cooking temperatures may seem like the bare minimum that you can do for your restaurant's customers, but it's still a foundation for making sure they have a great time and keep returning.
